CarbonEthics collaborates with the Ministry of Tourism of Republic Indonesia to advance sustainable tourism by implementing sustainability principles, complete with carbon emissions calculations through the WISE Trip program.
What is WISE Trip?
Wonderful Indonesia Sustainable Experience (WISE) Trip is a tourism program designed to offer travelers a responsible and mindful exploration of Indonesia's beauty.
This program offers 25 specially designed travel packages, divided into five themes of special interest tourism: Adventure & Ecotourism, Gastronomy, Wellness, Heritage, and Marine.
Among the various available packages, some are designed to focus on the coastal ecosystem, including:
Coral Conservation Tour
Mangrove Conservation Trip
However, every trip inevitably generates carbon emissions from various activities, such as transportation, food consumption, and tourism activities undertaken by travelers. Therefore, it is essential to have a method to offset these emissions in order to maintain environmental balance. In this regard, CarbonEthics collaborates with the Ministry of Tourism.
This partnership involves calculating the carbon emissions from all aspects of the trip and implementing a carbon offset program through the restoration of blue carbon ecosystems, such as mangrove rehabilitation.
Blue carbon ecosystems refer to the carbon captured and stored by coastal and marine habitats such as mangroves and seagrasses. Coral reefs, another crucial component, play an important role in protecting biodiversity.
But what makes the restoration of blue carbon ecosystems so important?
It’s not only because of their ability to capture and store carbon but also due to the broad benefits they provide, including:
Sequestering carbon up to 10 times more effectively than terrestrial forests.
Protection Against Natural Disasters: Mangroves and other blue carbon ecosystems serve as natural protectors for coastal communities. They can dampen the impact of storms, reduce flood risks, and prevent coastal erosion.
Biodiversity Conservation: These ecosystems are home to various species, from breeding grounds for fish to habitats for birds and migratory species such as sea turtles.
By preserving blue carbon ecosystems, we are also protecting the life chain that helps maintain climate balance, provides disaster protection, and supports the livelihoods of coastal communities.
