How familiar are you with the beauty of underwater wildlife in Indonesia? While many of us may only have seen it from the documentaries, those who have gone for a snorkeling or diving trip must have considered seeing the rich marine species of Indonesia an unforgettable life experience.
Yes, it is such a blessing that our country possesses an extraordinary natural resource, especially the marine biodiversity. Even according to the UNDP ( United Nations Development Programme), Indonesia has the highest coral reef and fish diversity in the world. But did you know that corals are now under deadly threats when they are actually worth more than what meets the eye?
Coral reefs are the rainforest of the sea. They play many important roles and provide benefits for life, such as becoming a convenient habitat and supplying food for fish and other marine organisms, boosting local tourism and economies in many developing countries, and even reducing the damage of storms and hurricanes. Imagine the world without them!
Now would you like to join us in protecting corals from environmental degradation? Starting from ourselves, we can help to conserve the beautiful corals by following these 5 simple steps:
1. Say NO to Littering
We can't stress this enough, peeps. Always remember to pick up your trash after spending time on the beach or anywhere you are.
Any kind of plastic litter that escapes to the sea will pollute the water and harm the marine animals, even if it's as small as a single-user plastic straw.
2. Use Less Water
The less water we use every day, the less wastewater carrying liquid pollutants will flow into the ocean. This should not only apply for household use but more importantly for agricultural, industrial, and commercial use of water.
3. Just Dive, Don't Disturb
While having fun snorkeling or diving in the sea, never touch or pick up any marine creatures out of curiosity. It's not just for your safety but also for the health of the corals. A simple act of touching may damage corals' sensitive protecting layer and eventually kill them.
4. Use a Reef-friendly Sunscreen
Before going out in the sun, check the ingredients of your favorite sunscreen or sunblock before applying it to your skin. Does it contain harmful chemicals, such as Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, or Octocrylene? When you swim or shower, these chemicals are washed away to the waterway and may cause infertility to fish and coral bleaching.
5. Adopt a Baby Coral!
Here on Carbon Ethics, we welcome you to join us in the restoration of depleting coral reefs in Indonesia by planting baby corals! Go to Our Products page and adopt a single baby coral, or simply choose Coral Rockpile package with more coral babies and you can customized your name on it. That also makes a unique gift, right?
Preserving marine biodiversity is not just our responsibility for future generations, but it can also be a great way of expressing gratitude to Mother Nature. Are you ready to protect coral reefs with us?
