Yeay! You made it to the last unit! It is an achievement indeed!
Let’s find out what you can do with CarbonEthics to become the agent of change!
SUB-UNIT 1
ABSORB YOUR CARBON AND HELP THE COMMUNITY AT THE SAME TIME!
In unit 5, we talked briefly about carbon offsetting and in this unit we’ll dive into a bit more detail.
Carbon offsetting is when you reduce your carbon footprint by contributing to activities that remove or absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Examples of carbon offsetting activities include funding projects such as tree planting, land restoration, and renewable energy production. The idea is to balance out carbon emissions by paying for emission savings in other parts of the world.
Apart from reducing carbon emissions, carbon offsetting projects also support local communities. In many instances, carbon offset projects improve biodiversity, aid reforestation, and provide social benefits to local communities.
So, who can fund carbon offset projects?
Businesses, governments, organizations, and even individuals can fund carbon offset projects. That’s right, even YOU can offset your carbon emissions!
However, don’t use carbon offsetting as an excuse to not reduce your own carbon footprint. Implement the changes we discussed in unit 5 first. Remember: reduce what you can first, offset what you can’t second!
Alright, carbon offset, sounds cool. How does it work exactly?
Let’s explain using the following example:
Say you want to go on a trip from Jakarta to Bali and you want to absorb your carbon emissions.
You would then take the following steps using CarbonEthics’ Carbon Calculator and Blue Carbon Packages:
And that’s just one simple example of how to use the Carbon Calculator. You can use it for every aspect of your daily life, helping you to achieve a net-zero carbon lifestyle!
Remember, behind every plantation to absorb your carbon footprint there's a story behind it.
For direct restoration and conservation activities, CarbonEthics has an innovative partnership with local farmers for planting mangrove trees and corals and has been a leader in seagrass cultivation research. Besides helping to cultivate a healthy coastal ecosystem that has quantifiable climate and carbon benefits, this partnership has the added benefit of improving the livelihoods of participating coastal communities.
CarbonEthics' direct restoration and conservation activities are community-based, meaning we empower and enable local communities to be the farmers for our mangrove, seagrass, seaweed and coral. As of 2021, a total of 50 farmers' households living around small islands in Indonesia have been supported by CarbonEthics.
At CarbonEthics, we focus on educating people to reduce their carbon footprint and offering them to absorb their unavoidable emissions via direct restoration and conservation of blue carbon ecosystems. This is mainly because these ecosystems can store up to 10 times more carbon than terrestrial forests! So, they play a critical role in addressing the climate crisis.
With these efforts, we strive to limit the impacts of the global climate crisis. We believe in community-centric carbon sequestration - working hand in hand with local communities to protect and restore the coastal ecosystems that help safeguard our climate.
SUB-UNIT 2
PLEDGE WITH CARBONETHICS!
Now that you are nearly finished with the Carbon Voice Curriculum, it is time to create change by doing small actions into your daily habits to reduce your carbon footprint.
We understand that it takes one step at a time to change. Therefore, CarbonEthics invites you to make a pledge to start changing your habits today, choosing from the list of activities below:
Reduce waste production through refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot.
Save energy by unplugging electronic devices & turning off lights when not in use.
Have a better diet by reducing meat consumption, especially beef and goat. Switch instead to organic and locally produced foods.
Reduce transport emissions by using public transportation and shared rides or walking for a shorter distance.
Voice out about climate change and its impacts by sharing posts on your social media and educating the closest people around you.
Absorb your carbon footprint with CarbonEthics to conserve and restore blue carbon ecosystems as well as help support local communities or you can plant your own trees.
Every action you take will generate a positive impact on our planet, oceans, society and eventually the future of the next generations.
CarbonEthics believes that climate change will only be addressed if individuals, businesses, organizations, communities and governments take responsible real actions to reduce our carbon emissions as much as possible, including absorbing the remaining unavoidable emissions for achieving carbon neutral. Hence, this will be our mission together!
